After rescuing these horses, we discovered deeper health issues that led us to make the decision to make them a permanent resident at Layla Rose Ranch. While we are not a sanctuary, if we cannot ensure a happy ending in a new Forever home when they leave us, then the horse will remain with us to live out its life.
One note, we will only take sponsorships up to $250 per horse per month. We know some places will allow tons of people to “sponsor” an animal, but we want you to know the horse you are sponsoring is all yours. Your name will appear below on this page as an official sponsor.

Shelby – $250/ month
Shelby is an 8 year old Rocky Mountain Gaited Mare. She is the sweetest horse on the ranch and the boss mare. When we got ready to place her up for adoption, we noticed her fetlocks looked like they were dropping when she picked p her pace. We contacted our vet and after some detailed examination and tests, we found out she has DSLD (degenerative suspensory ligament desmitis). Unfortunately, there is no cure for DSLD and treatments are typically aimed at keeping the horse as comfortable as possible for as long as possible. And that is exactly what we are doing.
Shelby has supplements each day, Equioxx daily to ease her pain, and a regular rhythm of injections to try and slow the disease. She was retired from riding immediately and just spends her days bossing everyone around and living her best life at the Ranch.
We have been successful in slowing the disease, but with no cure in sight, her years are numbered. We hope to take her to Colorado next year and let her wander the fields and streams of her heritage.

Buddy
Buddy was 18 years old when we took him in 3 years ago. He is the worst case of abuse we have dealt with. You can still see the marks from the whips along his hide and across his face. In fact, one blow was so severe across his eye that eventually we had to have it removed. He had pneumonia, strangely, worms to go along with his injuries.
He has healed and done great with us. We have even had one of our daughters on him. But, after years of attempts to adopt Buddy out, we finally made the decision to make him a resident. It was apparent that people thought a horse with only one eye was “defective” and not ridable. (Even though we posted videos of us riding him.) 
Buddy serves as our ambassador for community outreach and is as gentle as they come. He is the “uncle” on the Ranch as you can see in the image on the right. Every new rescue that comes in, he comes along side and mentors them. Such a great attitude to help everyone else get their Forever home, when he never got his own. But he is well loved for sure.

Magic
So, when we got contacted to rescue this guy, we were told it was a pony. It was fine, just a snotty nose. When we got there, we found Magic tied to the gate with his Coggins paperwork. We immediately knew something was wrong as we tried to load him in the trailer. We took him straight to the vet (2 hours away) and found that he had pneumonia, 2 abscesses and a collapsed lung. He stayed in the hospital for 2 weeks before we brought him home.
He weighed 100lbs when we got him. He is new to us, but Catherine made the decision to make him a resident as she spent hours holding him in the stall at the vet hospital. We plan to use him for community outreach and spread some horse joy in homes and hospitals in the area.
